By: Tim O’Reilly

Introduction

In the book ‘WTF?: What’s the Future and Why It’s Up to Us,’ Tim O’Reilly shares his in-depth insights into the driving forces behind the modern technology industry: artificial intelligence, specifically algorithms, and modern digital platforms. The book delves into the world of open-source software, the rise of digital platforms, and the crucial role algorithms play in running these platforms. As these innovations disrupt and reshape businesses, government structures, and even workforces, O’Reilly advocates for embracing and harnessing their potential to create a better future for all, rather than resisting change.

The Power of Modern Digital Platforms and Algorithms

The advent of free and open-source software in the 1990s was a game-changer for the modern industry. Companies such as Uber and Amazon have benefitted greatly from this model and the rapid growth it generates. Additionally, algorithms are the driving force behind every platform, governing complex functions and processing enormous amounts of data much faster than any human can. As a result, they are referred to as a sort of artificial intelligence that is becoming increasingly advanced. These developments have had a significant impact on businesses and the world at large.

Applying the Platform Model

This book extract explores the possibility of implementing a platform-model in government and compares it to the success of user-based platforms such as Amazon, Lyft, and Google. The autonomous-platform model, where each team has the freedom to pursue its own goals with a specific customer in mind, is analyzed as a way to improve problem-solving and pinpoint defects. The government’s typical “vending machine” approach that provides access to a limited selection of benefits is contrasted with a platform-modeled government that identifies and coordinates the necessary parties to fix a problem. Rather than dictating what is best for people, the government would coordinate citizens’ cooperation, acting as a small government providing big services.

The Power and Pitfalls of Algorithms

Algorithms have revolutionized the platform model and have started to shape traditional business structures. Amazon’s two-pizza teams are a prime example of how algorithms work in regulating their efficiency. However, algorithms still require human supervision as they lack practicality and can cause unintended consequences. They’re powerful tools that need proper management. Although they may optimize efficiency in operations and decision-making, there are growing concerns about their impact on society. We need to be mindful of both the benefits and the potential pitfalls of relying on algorithmic technology.

The Rogue Algorithms

Rogue algorithms have already infiltrated our lives. Fake news and filter bubbles are just some of the side effects of algorithmic technology. Social media and search engine algorithms promote popular content instead of honest journalism, filter out opposing opinions, and, most importantly, don’t care whether the information published is true or not. While this is concerning, much more worrying is the infiltration of rogue algorithms in the modern financial market. Shareholder value became the priority for businesses, pushing aside the human interests of goods and services. High-frequency trading algorithms have given traders an edge over humans in the stock market, but humans can no longer comprehend its speed, leading to a pursuit of short-term profits at the expense of human costs. The growing problem of rogue algorithms is a digital force that’s out of human control.
