The Evolution of Time

The universe began 15 billion years ago, but it took a mere fraction of a second to cool down enough for gravity to form. Within seconds, matter and electromagnetic forces emerged. Earth was formed nine billion years later, and it took another billion years for single-celled organisms to emerge. Computation and Evolution

All forms of life evolve, and a significant factor in this process is computation. Computation is the ability to store and use information to solve problems. Our nervous system became increasingly complex over time and allowed us to store memories and recognize patterns. Computation isn’t limited to biology; it’s integral to technology as well. Mechanical calculators evolved into electrical systems that automated the entire US Census. Computation allowed technology to evolve exponentially, and this process is still accelerating at an exponential rate. The Laws of Time

Time speeds up and slows down due to chaos and order, respectively. The Law of Increasing Chaos explains how time expands exponentially in response to chaos in a closed system, such as the development of the universe. On the other hand, The Law of Accelerating Returns regulates evolution, where time exponentially contracts, or accelerates, as order exponentially increases in any given process. This law applies to human and technological evolution, and it refers to the product of the evolutionary process, which accelerates exponentially relative to the increases in order.

Building Intelligent Machines

Building intelligent machines requires knowledge and material resources. The process of designing computers that can learn for themselves, just like humans, is possible with the use of neural nets. These structures allow the machines to learn from their environment and ultimately acquire knowledge. However, besides knowledge, smart machines also rely on computation to function. Although the human brain is capable of computation, it has limited capacity. Machines, on the other hand, can easily store and recall vast amounts of information instantly, which makes them so efficient. DNA must be removed from the equation to build new and better designs since its limited neural capacity will never suffice for the task. Human beings have the ability to create technology that doesn’t rely on DNA for evolution, which provides an exciting prospect of what we can achieve in the future.
