Similarly, individuals with overactive amygdala have to retreat to calm environments to recharge. In the absence of the appropriate level of stimulation, people resort to counterproductive and addictive habits to find excitement. Therefore, it is crucial to identify factors that stimulate our brains at the right level, letting us operate at our best performance.

Overcoming Addiction through Motivational Interviewing

Addiction can arise from brain imbalances and lead to debilitating consequences. Motivational interviewing is a technique that helps boost motivation and restore balance in the brain. By rating one’s motivation, asking important questions, identifying personal strengths, and taking small first steps, individuals can successfully overcome addiction. This approach proved helpful for clients like Jill and Bart, who suffered from an overactive limbic system and weak prefrontal cortex, respectively. Through motivational interviewing, Bart was able to avoid the racetrack and say “no” to his brother-in-law’s invitations, while Jill was able to reduce her use of marijuana.

Mindful Meditation for a Balanced Brain

By practicing mindfulness through meditation, you can rebalance your brain without the use of drugs. MRI scanning has shown that meditation can quiet the brain’s amygdala and increase activity in the prefrontal cortex, leading to a calmer and happier state of mind. Refocus on your breathing whenever your mind wanders, and you’ll feel more calm and able to listen to yourself more deeply.
