The Genius of Walt Disney’s Leadership

Walt Disney was a leader who possessed a genius for recognizing talent and had a commitment to producing the best. He was a risk-taker who trusted his intuition, recognized the need to develop new ways of doing things and fostered artistic, technological and business innovations. Despite not being much of a people person, he surrounded himself with creative individuals who shared his long-range vision and good timing. Disney closely supervised everything that carried his name, and he was unafraid to take significant risks to back up his intuition. Leadership, according to Disney, is not conditioned on anyone’s position or role as followers are an integral part of it too. In the original Disney business, Walt’s brother, Roy, was the manager who complemented Walt’s role as the creative leader. The Disney Company owes its success to their collaborative contributions. However, after Walt’s demise, the company suffered from a lack of a visionary, creative, and risk-taking leader. Without Walt’s leadership, the company became moderately successful but uninspired for two decades under Roy’s solitary leadership.

Power and Influence

Power and influence are complex and multifaceted, and can be affected by various tangible and intangible factors, including leadership styles, rewards, coercion, and the situation. Leaders have the potential to inspire positive change in their followers, but the reverse is also true. Exceptional bosses can serve as role models for putting values into action, while some can hinder growth. Transformational and charismatic leadership are inherently future-oriented, and vision is not limited to grand social movements, but is relevant to commonplace business situations as well. However, power has its limits and can be hampered by bureaucratic complexities.
